What Is an eSIM?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a programmable SIM card built directly into your device's hardware. Unlike a traditional SIM card that you physically insert and remove, an eSIM is activated digitally โ€” you download a carrier profile via QR code or app.

For travelers, this means you can purchase and activate a local data plan before you even leave home, arriving at your destination already connected. No airport SIM kiosks, no language barriers, no waiting.

eSIM is governed by the GSMA SGP.22 specification and supported by all major device manufacturers since 2018.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked

Do I need to cancel my current phone plan to use eSIM?
No. eSIM works alongside your existing SIM. Most people keep their home SIM active for calls and texts while using eSIM for local data abroad. This is the most practical setup for travelers.
Is eSIM secure?
Yes. eSIM profiles are cryptographically bound to your specific device's EID and cannot be cloned. The eUICC chip achieves EAL4+ security certification. The GSMA SGP.22 standard includes multiple layers of authentication.
Can I reuse an eSIM profile after deleting it?
This depends on the provider. Some allow reinstallation; others issue single-use QR codes that expire after first scan. Always check your provider's policy before deleting a profile. Save a screenshot of your QR code as backup.
What happens to my eSIM if I change phones?
eSIM profiles are device-specific. When you get a new phone, you'll need to reinstall your eSIM profiles. On iPhone, you can transfer eSIMs during device setup. On Android, the process varies by provider โ€” contact them for transfer instructions.
